Through-coloured render has become one of the most popular ways to upgrade the outside of a home. Instead of painting the render every few years, you get a finish with the colour mixed right through it. RCR Connections Ltd applies K-Rend and other monocouche systems across Solihull, Birmingham, Coventry and the wider West Midlands.
What is monocouche render?
“Monocouche” is French for “single layer”. These renders are factory-blended mixes of cement, lime, aggregates and pigment, designed to go on in one or two passes, depending on the system and the wall. K-Rend is a well-known brand, and other manufacturers make similar products. After application, the surface is usually scraped back to give a slightly textured, even finish that shows the true colour.

Is it right for my wall?
Monocouche works well on most brick and block. Some surfaces need extra preparation, such as smooth engineering brick, painted walls or old cement render, and in some cases a different system is better. Very exposed elevations or properties with insulation boards often suit a thin-coat silicone system instead. We’ll look at your walls and recommend what’s sensible for them, not just what’s fashionable.
Our process
- Survey and photos: check the substrate, existing render, damp and cracks.
- Preparation: remove defective render, repair, and apply primer or base coat where the system needs it.
- Beads and detailing: stainless or PVC beads at corners, reveals and bellcast, and a clean line above the DPC.
- Application and scraping: applied in suitable weather, then scraped back at the right time for an even texture.
- Finishing: sealing around frames, removing masking, and a full tidy-up.
Weather matters
Through-coloured render should not be applied in frost, heavy rain or strong direct heat, because these can cause patchiness or poor curing. We schedule jobs around the forecast and protect fresh work where we need to. That’s one reason we’d rather book a date that suits the weather than rush.
