Tamworth expanded rapidly from the 1960s as an overspill town for Birmingham, so much of its housing is post-war: estates in Belgrave, Stonydelph, Glascote Heath, Amington, Wilnecote, Hockley and Leyfields, with older Victorian terraces around the town centre, Kettlebrook and Glascote. Many of these houses have pebble-dash, cladding panels or tired render that’s cracked or stained. RCR Connections Ltd is a Solihull-based rendering and plastering company, and we render homes across Tamworth, Fazeley, Dosthill, Kingsbury and Polesworth.
Render systems we use
- Through-coloured render (K-Rend, monocouche): colour runs through, so it doesn’t need painting.
- Silicone render: thin, flexible and water-repellent, good for exposed walls and over insulation.
- Sand and cement render: traditional, durable and normally painted.
- Insulated render (EWI): render over insulation boards to cut heat loss.
Updating 1960s and 70s houses
On Tamworth’s overspill-era estates, common rendering jobs include:
- removing failing pebble-dash and re-rendering
- rendering over mixed brick and cladding panels for a cleaner finish (timber or plastic panels need replacing with a suitable board first)
- rendering extensions to match the main house
- refreshing stained or cracked render
Will my old render need removing?
We tap-test the walls. If old render or pebble-dash is sound and well bonded, a suitable system can often go over it after preparation. If it’s hollow, cracked or loose, it needs removing first. We’ll tell you honestly which applies.
Choosing a colour
Off-whites, creams and light greys tend to look cleaner for longer than brilliant white, especially on north-facing walls. If neighbouring houses on a terrace share a look, consider how a change will sit alongside them. We can show sample cards before you choose.
How a rendering job works
- Photos first. WhatsApp pictures of the walls to 07453 614095.
- Survey and preparation. Cracks, damp and hollow render are checked, then repairs and priming.
- Protection and scaffold. Windows, doors and paths are masked, and scaffold arranged where needed.
- Application. Beads, base coat and mesh where needed, then the finish coat.
- Clean-up and walk-round.
Planning in Tamworth
Re-rendering is usually permitted development, but conservation areas, such as the town centre around the castle, and listed buildings are different. Tamworth Borough Council can advise. Render needs dry weather above about 5°C to cure properly.
Plastering inside too
We also skim, re-plaster, board and repair ceilings. See plastering in Birmingham and Coventry.
Areas of Tamworth we cover
We cover Belgrave, Stonydelph, Glascote, Glascote Heath, Amington, Wilnecote, Hockley, Leyfields, Kettlebrook, Bolehall, Two Gates and Dosthill, plus nearby Fazeley, Kingsbury, Polesworth and Dordon. Polesworth, Dordon and Kingsbury are in North Warwickshire, so planning there goes to North Warwickshire Borough Council.
Insulated render
Some older Tamworth terraces have solid walls, and external wall insulation with a render finish can cut heat loss noticeably. It adds thickness to the wall, so sills and downpipes may need extending.
