Walsall has a broad mix of housing that often needs exterior work: Victorian terraces in Caldmore, Palfrey, Pleck and Chuckery; inter-war semis in Bloxwich, Rushall and Park Hall; and large post-war estates in Beechdale, Blakenall, Goscote, Willenhall, Brownhills and Aldridge. Many of these houses have pebble-dash, spar dash or render that’s cracked, stained or blown. RCR Connections Ltd is a rendering and plastering company based in Solihull, and we render homes across Walsall, Bloxwich, Aldridge, Streetly, Pelsall, Brownhills and Willenhall.
Render systems we use
- Through-coloured render (K-Rend, monocouche): colour runs through, so no painting is needed.
- Silicone render: thin, flexible and water-repellent, helps walls stay cleaner.
- Sand and cement render: traditional, hard-wearing, normally painted.
- Insulated render (EWI): insulation boards with a render finish to cut heat loss.
Pebble-dash on post-war houses
Lots of Walsall’s post-war houses were finished in pebble-dash. Over decades, it cracks and comes away, letting water in behind. We tap-test the walls. If the old finish is sound, it can sometimes be covered with a suitable system after preparation. If it’s hollow or loose, it needs removing, which is dusty, so windows are protected and neighbours should be told.
Solid-walled terraces and insulated render
Older terraces in Caldmore, Palfrey and Chuckery have solid walls that lose heat quickly. External wall insulation with a render finish can make them noticeably warmer. It adds thickness, so sills, downpipes and meters may need extending or moving. The wall needs to be sound and dry before insulating.
Choosing a colour
Off-whites, creams and light greys tend to look cleaner for longer than brilliant white, especially on north-facing walls. If your house is part of a terrace or semi pair, think about how the new colour sits next to your neighbours. We can bring sample cards.
How a rendering job works
- Photos first. WhatsApp pictures of the walls to 07453 614095.
- Survey and preparation. We check cracks, damp and hollow render, then repair and prime.
- Protection and scaffold. Windows, doors and paths are masked, with scaffold where needed.
- Application. Beads, base coat and mesh where needed, then the finish coat.
- Clean-up and walk-round.
Planning in Walsall
Walsall Council handles planning. Re-rendering is usually permitted development, but conservation areas, such as parts of the town centre, Caldmore Green and Aldridge, and listed buildings are different. Check first if you’re unsure.
Weather
Render needs dry weather and temperatures above about 5°C while it cures, so spring to autumn is ideal. We plan around the forecast so the job isn’t rushed.
Plastering inside too
We also skim, re-plaster, board and repair ceilings. See plastering in Birmingham and Coventry, or our Sutton Coldfield page if you’re near Streetly.
Rendering extensions to match
If you’ve added an extension, rendering it to match or complement the main house can tie the two together. We can match colour and texture where the existing finish allows.
