Southam is a small market town in south-east Warwickshire, on the A423 between Leamington Spa and Banbury. Its old centre around Market Hill, High Street and the church of St James has stone and brick buildings, some timber-framed. Most of the town’s homes are post-war and modern, with large newer developments added in recent years on the edges of town. Nearby villages include Long Itchington, Stockton, Napton-on-the-Hill, Ladbroke, Harbury and Bishop’s Itchington. RCR Connections Ltd is a plastering and rendering company based in Solihull, and we take on plastering work in Southam and the surrounding villages.
Plastering services
- Skimming walls and ceilings ready to decorate.
- Re-plastering where old plaster has failed.
- Ceilings: over-boarding cracked or textured ceilings.
- Plasterboard for extensions, loft rooms and garage conversions.
- Patch repairs after rewiring and kitchen fitting.
New-build homes
Southam has grown a lot in recent years. In the first couple of years after moving into a new-build, it’s normal to see small cracks along plasterboard joints, around door frames and where walls meet ceilings, plus nail pops. Once the house has settled, these can be raked out, filled, taped and skimmed. If your home is still under a builder’s warranty, check with them first.
Older homes in the centre
Southam town centre is a conservation area with listed buildings. Older stone and brick homes are usually solid-walled and need breathable finishes. Stratford-on-Avon District Council handles planning and listed building consent. We’ll give you an honest view, including when a lime specialist would be better suited.
Post-war homes
On 1960s and 70s homes, common jobs are over-boarding Artex ceilings (have pre-2000 Artex tested for asbestos first), skimming tired walls, and boarding extensions.
Getting a price for a rural job
Southam and its villages are a drive from our Solihull base, so photos help a lot. WhatsApp pictures of each wall or ceiling with rough sizes to 07453 614095, and we’ll give you a guide price. If the job goes ahead, we’ll plan the work in sensible blocks.
How a job works
- Photos and a guide price.
- A visit if needed.
- Protection of floors and furniture.
- Plastering and a full clean-up, with aftercare advice.
Drying and painting
A skim needs a few days to dry, and backing coats longer. Use a mist coat first.
Rendering
We also apply sand and cement, silicone, K-Rend/monocouche and insulated render (EWI). See our K-Rend and monocouche page, rendering in Solihull and our Leamington Spa page.
Villages around Southam
We cover Long Itchington, Stockton, Napton-on-the-Hill, Ladbroke, Harbury, Bishop’s Itchington, Priors Marston and Wormleighton. Many of these villages have stone cottages in conservation areas, often built from local Hornton or blue lias stone, which need breathable finishes.
Getting the room ready
Clear the room or move furniture to the middle, take down curtains and pictures, and have an electrician loosen sockets and switches.
