Olton is one of Solihull’s most established suburbs, between Acocks Green and Solihull town centre. Much of its housing was built between the 1900s and 1930s: Edwardian and inter-war semis and detached houses around Kineton Green Road, St Bernard’s Road, Richmond Road and Lode Lane, with larger homes near Olton Mere and the golf course. Around Elmdon Heath and towards Lyndon there are more post-war homes. RCR Connections Ltd is a plastering and rendering company based in Solihull, so Olton is right on our doorstep.

Plastering services in Olton

Edwardian and 1930s houses

Older Olton homes often still have their original plaster, and over a century it can become loose, cracked or hollow. Tap a wall: if it sounds hollow, the plaster has come away from the brickwork. Small hollow patches can be cut out and repaired, while large areas are better re-plastered. Original ceilings are usually lath-and-plaster. If they’re still firmly attached, over-boarding is the tidiest fix. If they’re sagging, they’ll need taking down first, which we do with the room sealed off.

Original features

Many Olton houses still have picture rails, deep skirtings, cornices and ceiling roses. We’ll protect and work around these where they’re staying. If you want to keep a cornice but replace the ceiling, tell us before we quote, as it changes how the job is done.

Extensions and knock-throughs

Olton’s semis are often extended at the rear, with the kitchen and dining room knocked into one open space. Once the steel is in and building control is happy, we can board and skim the new ceiling, then skim the old walls so the whole room has a matching finish.

How a job works

  1. WhatsApp photos and rough room sizes to 07453 614095.
  2. We send a guide price and visit if needed.
  3. We protect floors, stairs and furniture.
  4. We plaster, tidy up and give aftercare advice.

Drying and painting

A skim usually needs a few days to dry, and thicker backing coats need longer. Wait until the plaster is an even pale colour, then apply a mist coat first.

Rendering in Olton

Olton is part of Solihull Metropolitan Borough, and planning questions go to Solihull Council. We also apply sand and cement, silicone, K-Rend/monocouche and insulated render (EWI). See rendering in Solihull and our K-Rend and monocouche page.

Areas around Olton we cover

We cover Olton itself, plus Elmdon Heath, Lyndon, Sheldon, Hobs Moat, Acocks Green, Solihull Lodge, Ulverley Green and Solihull town centre. Olton station, the Mere and the Grand Union Canal sit at the centre of the area, and parking on some of the narrower Edwardian roads can be tight, so let us know where we can park and mix when you get in touch.

Mist coats and decorating

Once the plaster is dry, the first coat should be a watered-down contract matt, which soaks in and seals the surface. Vinyl paints on fresh plaster tend to peel.
