Halesowen, on the edge of the Black Country and the Clent Hills, has a lot of housing that suits rendering: Victorian terraces around the town centre and Hasbury, inter-war semis in Hayley Green and Cradley, and large post-war estates in Hawne, Hurst Green, Quinton’s edges, Lapal and Illey. Many of these houses have pebble-dash, spar dash or render that’s cracked, stained or come loose. RCR Connections Ltd is a rendering and plastering company based in Solihull, and we render homes across Halesowen, Cradley, Hasbury, Hayley Green, Romsley and Lapal.
Render systems we use
- Through-coloured render (K-Rend, monocouche): the colour runs through, so it doesn’t need painting.
- Silicone render: thin, flexible and water-repellent, helps walls stay cleaner.
- Sand and cement render: traditional, hard-wearing, normally painted.
- Insulated render (EWI): insulation boards with a render finish to cut heat loss.
Pebble-dash and failed render
A lot of Halesowen’s post-war houses were finished in pebble-dash. Over time, it can crack and come away from the wall, letting rain get behind it. We tap-test the walls first. If the old finish is sound, a suitable system may go over it after preparation. If it’s hollow or loose, it needs removing, which is dusty and noisy, so neighbours should be told and windows protected.
Exposed walls near the Clent Hills
Homes on higher ground in Hasbury, Hayley Green and towards Romsley take more wind-driven rain. A flexible, water-repellent finish like silicone render can be a good choice on exposed walls. North-facing walls and those under trees are prone to green algae, so a lighter shade that isn’t brilliant white can look cleaner for longer.
Insulated render on solid walls
Halesowen’s Victorian terraces mostly have solid walls with no cavity. External wall insulation with a render finish can make these homes noticeably warmer. It adds thickness to the wall, so sills, downpipes, gas meters and satellite dishes may need extending or moving, which we plan for at the survey stage.
How a rendering job works
- Photos first. WhatsApp pictures of the walls to 07453 614095.
- Survey and preparation. We check cracks, damp and hollow render, then repair and prime.
- Protection and scaffold. Windows, doors and paths are masked, and scaffold is arranged where needed.
- Application. Beads, base coat and mesh where needed, then the finish coat.
- Clean-up. We clear the site and walk round with you.
Planning in Halesowen
Halesowen is in Dudley borough, so planning questions go to Dudley Council. Re-rendering is usually permitted development, but conservation areas, including the town centre area around St John the Baptist church, and listed buildings are different. Check first if you’re unsure.
Choosing a colour
Render comes in many shades. Off-whites, creams and soft greys tend to look clean for longer in Halesowen’s weather. We can show you sample cards against your roof and windows before you decide.
