Redditch grew quickly as a new town from the 1960s, so much of its housing is post-war: estates in Matchborough, Winyates, Church Hill, Woodrow, Lodge Park and Greenlands, with older Victorian terraces around the town centre, Headless Cross and Crabbs Cross, and newer homes at Brockhill and Webheath. Many of these houses have panels of tired render, pebble-dash or timber cladding that have weathered badly. RCR Connections Ltd is a Solihull-based plastering and rendering company, and we render homes across Redditch, Astwood Bank, Studley and Alvechurch.

Render systems we use

Updating new-town houses

On 1960s and 70s houses, the main job is often removing failing render or pebble-dash and re-rendering, or covering mixed brick and cladding panels to give a cleaner, more modern finish. Where old render is hollow, it comes off. Where it’s sound, a suitable system may go over it. We’ll tell you which applies.

How a rendering job works

  1. Photos first. WhatsApp pictures of the walls to 07453 614095.
  2. Survey and preparation. We check for cracks, damp and hollow render, then repair and prime.
  3. Protection and scaffold. Windows, doors and paths are masked; scaffold is arranged where needed.
  4. Application. Beads, base coat and mesh where needed, then the finish coat.
  5. Clean-up. We clear the site and walk round the job with you.

Planning in Redditch

Re-rendering is usually permitted development, but conservation areas, listed buildings and some estates with restrictions are different. Redditch Borough Council can advise. Weather matters too: render needs dry conditions above about 5°C.

Areas of Redditch we cover

We render homes in all of Redditch’s districts, including Matchborough, Winyates, Church Hill, Woodrow, Lodge Park, Greenlands, Batchley, Abbeydale, Oakenshaw, Headless Cross, Crabbs Cross, Webheath, Brockhill and Enfield, plus nearby Astwood Bank, Feckenham, Studley, Alvechurch and Beoley.

Pebble-dash and spar dash

Many Redditch houses have pebble-dash or spar dash on the front or around bay windows. If it’s sound, it can sometimes be covered with a suitable system once the surface has been prepared and a scratch coat or levelling coat applied. If it’s cracked, loose or hollow, it should be removed first, which is a dusty job that needs proper protection and sometimes scaffolding. We’ll tap-test the walls and tell you which applies before quoting.

Mixed elevations and cladding panels

New-town houses often have a combination of brick, tile hanging and timber or uPVC cladding panels. Rendering over the panelled sections, or the whole elevation, can give a cleaner finish. Panels usually need replacing with a suitable backing board before they can be rendered, because render can’t go directly onto timber or plastic. Where several houses in a terrace share one look, think about how a change will appear next to your neighbours.

Insulated render on solid walls

Some older Redditch terraces have solid walls without a cavity, which lose heat quickly. External wall insulation (EWI) with a render finish can make a real difference to comfort. It does change the wall thickness, so window sills, downpipes and gas meters may need extending or moving.
